Neptune-like Planet.





In a first, a giant world orbiting a white dwarf star that was dead has been discovered in the form of a disk of gas generated from its atmosphere.





The discovery suggests that there might be a lot planets around stars. Until now, there has never been evidence of a world that has survived a star's transition into a white dwarf. The celebrity WDJ0914+1914 was identified in a survey of dwarfs observed by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. Researchers at Warwick analysed subtle variations in the light emitted to identify the elements present around the star.

Lead author Dr Boris Gaensicke, from the University of Warwick said,"At first, we thought that this was a binary star with an accretion disc formed from mass flowing between the two stars. However, our observations demonstrate that it is a single white dwarf with a disk around it about ten times the size of the sun, made of hydrogen, oxygen, and sulphur. Such a system hasn't been seen before, and it was immediately clear to me that this was a unique star."









Through a set of calculations, Dr Matthias Schreiber in Valparaíso's University revealed that the 28,000 degree Celsius by bombarding it with high energy photons Earth is slowly evaporating. The white dwarf is currently sucking on the lost mass of the planet into a gas disk around the star at a rate of over 3,000 tons per second. Schreiber says,"In a sense, WDJ0914+1914 is providing us with a glimpse into the very distant future of our solar system." This white dwarf was similar to the Sun but finally ran out of fuel, swelled up into a red giant, a 100 times the size of the sun. During that phase of its life, the star will have lost about half of its mass and what was left has shrunk dramatically ending size of the Earth up - the white dwarf is essentially the previous star's center.





In a companion paper headed by Dr Gaensicke and Dr Schreiber and published in Astrophysical Journal Letters, they detail how this will radiate energy photons to evaporate Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. As on WDJ0914 +1914, some of that gas is going to end up on the white dwarf will be observable for future generations of alien astronomers, and left behind by the Sun.





The astronomers argue that this evaporation and subsequent accretion by white dwarfs is a process and that it might open a new window.
